When The Job I Wanted Didn’t Exist, I Created It
Sometimes the right opportunity is just waiting for you to act
When I was finishing my undergraduate degree, I had the chance to begin teaching some off campus classes. The experience planted the seed for academic instruction, which I knew would mean more school after I graduated.
I moved down to Chicago and began a Master’s degree in health sciences. When I was admitted to the master’s program I sat down with the department head, and let him know about my intentions to teach in the program after I graduated. He was impressed by my enthusiasm and directness to make such a request at the beginning of my studies.
Knowing that this was my end goal after graduation, I began to look for other opportunities to teach while I was studying. One day in the second year of my degree, I received a course book of classes offered at a local community college.
As I was focusing on project management, I flipped the pages to see if they offered a project management course. To my surprise, they didn’t!
